- Pioneering the Future: JCIMED Inauguration Marks New Era in Medical Education
We are thrilled to announce the successful inauguration of the Jockey Club Institute for Medical Education and Development (JCIMED) on 27 November 2024 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. This landmark event signifies a major leap forward in postgraduate medical education and specialist training in Hong Kong.
The establishment of JCIMED directly reflects the Academy’s commitment to enhancing medical education, as outlined in our 2023 Position Paper on Postgraduate Medical Education. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has generously contributed approximately HK$50 million to establish JCIMED and support its numerous training projects for the next five years.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Ms Imelda Chan, Head of Charities (Positive Ageing & Elderly Care, and Healthy Community) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Prof. Gilberto Leung, President of the Academy; Prof. Philip Li, Vice-President (Education and Examinations) of the Academy; and Dr. Benny Cheng, Honorary Director of JCIMED. Their presence highlighted the importance of this initiative in shaping the future of healthcare education.
JCIMED’s mission encompasses a broad spectrum of postgraduate medical education, providing comprehensive training for specialists, specialist trainees, and healthcare professionals across various disciplines. The institute is set to revolutionise medical education by introducing state-of-the-art simulation technologies, including extended reality and artificial intelligence.
Prof. Gilberto Leung emphasised the significance of JCIMED, stating, “The JCIMED marks a new milestone in medical education for the Academy. It will shoulder a broader mandate to promote a more holistic postgraduate medical education, enhancing not only the quality of medical education but also injecting new vitality into the development of healthcare in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.”
The inauguration of JCIMED aligns with the Academy’s recent focus on innovation and technology in medical education, as exemplified by the successful Medical Education Conference held on 7 September 2024. This conference, which explored AI-driven innovation in healthcare training, set the stage for the cutting-edge approaches JCIMED aims to implement.
As we embark on this exciting journey, we are excited about the positive influence that JCIMED is expected to have on the future of healthcare education and practice. By fostering collaboration, embracing innovative technologies, and maintaining high standards in medical education, JCIMED is positioned to play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of medical professionals in Hong Kong and beyond.
